Erap Wants To Make You Laugh! Hahaha???
January 4, 2008
I heard from the primetime news last night that ex-president Joseph Estrada will make a comeback in the showbiz industry, but this time, as a comedian. Now this is weird news. The guy became popular as an action star in the 60s, became a national politician in the 80s, viewed as a hero of the masses in the 90s, got elected as president of this country a few years later, went through the whole political drama early this decade, convicted of plunder, and got pardoned late last year by the current president. Now he wants to become a comedian.
What's next Erap? Become an astronaut perhaps? And it keeps getting better: he also wants Ai Ai de las Alas to be his leading lady. This guy never fails to surprise us… Is he effing serious? After all the crap he went through (and all the crap WE went through because of him) he's actually considering going back to showbiz as a clown? Give me an effin' break.
I'd rather have him hit the movies again as an action star. That way the image of him being the guy with guns blazing and face smashing fists retains, if not reinforced by the movie. Moreover, his real life is a concoction of drama and action. Nothing about it was funny. When the country got screwed by the political scandals during his presidency, nobody was seen laughing. When the economy was put in danger due to foreign investments being pulled out and the peso-dollar exchange rate skyrocketing to unreasonable proportions, people stopped smiling altogether. If he would pursue a career in comedy, I think he's actually setting himself up for another set of bashings and criticisms. Didn't anyone tell him how unsuccessful his son was at it? Sigh. It's one thing when people laugh WITH you and when people laugh AT you. You once held the highest position in this country. Give yourself (and us) some respect.
Imagine the repercussions. He makes a movie with a supposedly funny plot. And since he's old, he's going to do it like Dolphy - slow and boring. But most likely, the movie will earn tons of money. The whole entertainment business will create a huge amount of buzz. And I'm sure everyone will talk about it. It's going to be so big that it could actually hit international fame. (Prediction number 10 happening already??) And the world is going to talk about how an ex-chief executive of the Philippines became a comedian for everybody to laugh at. Moo poop. Only in the Philippines.
Now I'm not saying comedy is a bad side of the movie industry. It's just that even as an actor, you still need to have a sense of (for lack of a better term) "respect" for yourself and your fans in terms of what projects to pursue and the like. Moreover if you served as number one representative of the country to the world. For example, Fernando Poe Jr. went on to be a cinema legend precisely because he stuck to his formula. People remember him as the guy who could throw a million punches in 32.8 seconds because he maintained that image. People think he's the only guy who could beat Chuck Norris in a fistfight precisely because he never let anyone change that notion. Even a few years after his death, all still think he can shoot down 50 goons with only 8 bullets. Blindfolded and without even sweating. Now that's power. See how strong the image stuck?
On the other hand Erap, in his own right, is a multi-awared actor. His acting was notably effective. But truth be told, the roles he played as hero of the masses are probably the only "good" image he's ever gonna get. The rest about him is tarnished with how the hell he screwed up the country a few years ago. And his enemies made sure that that's the only thing the people will remember him by. For me, it would be best for him to retain the hero of the masses image. If he wants to do movies, by all means, go do a movie. Just don't do comedy. It's political suicide. The imagery of the protagonists he played in his movies is what he ought to retain to the Filipinos' minds. Not a role Bayani Agbayani or Pekto would play. Just my opinion.
I just hope he's got everything under control. Otherwise, we could expect another wave of Erap Jokes in the near future. And this time, it would really sting.

so I’ve heard. But it is possible that the guy doesn’t have money anymore. Maybe Gloria took it all in exchange for his pardon. I dunno. As much as i want to give the guy some slack, the mere fact that he’s still making decisions detrimental to people’s welfare prompts me not to. I really hope he makes the proper decisions this time.
Posted by witssuzara at January 5, 2008, 2:14 pmAccording to the news:
1. Best actor award of MMFF went to Jinggoy Estrada
2. Erap is super proud of the legacy that resulted from his thespian days. From his being an action icon, to his being a mayor, and eventually a president.
3. I wanted to fart on his mouth not because he’s delusional, but because everything he said is the truth and it reveals the kind of crap that only happens in our country!
4. He would pair up with Jinggoy to further “revolutionize” Philippine cinema.
5. Ai-ai delas Alas wanted to have a kissing scene with him. “Bakit hindi?” uttered Erap
Stand further witness to the end of civilization.
Posted by Kris at January 8, 2008, 11:49 amFarting on his mouth might cause him to bite your ass Kris. And you wouldn’t want Erap biting your ass. Headline: “Ex-president Bites Blogger’s Ass. Hard.” Tsk. Tsk. Come to think of it, that’s how pathetic that side of the industry has come down to. I wish the showbiz heavyweights would speak up and quit blabbering political ass-kissing. Let Erap play as the bad guy for once. You know, the overlord type of role. I’m sure he’s going to do a great job. No pun intended.
Posted by witssuzara at January 8, 2008, 3:09 pmErap’s plan of a movie comeback is a calculated political move aimed at softening the impact of his conviction.
He is not as dumb as we think he is because he is a seasoned influential politician with major players lining up to get his “blessings”.
This is just the sad pathetic state of politics in the Philippines….. until the political playing field is levelled and fair we will see this aberration. Not that he is the only aberration because we see this even among the highly educated “leaders” just like what we see with that woman with a doctored errr doctorate degree ruining the nation and robbing the people of its dignity.

Posted by Political Jaywalker at January 18, 2008, 4:34 amYou have got to be kidding me.
Posted by Shaira at January 18, 2008, 8:47 am@jaywalker: ow c’mon… of course the showbiz comeback is politically motivated. it doesn’t take a genius to figure that out. if i was him, i’d also do the same! but that is not the whole point of this entry. It’s the fact that he’s taking on a comedy role in his comeback. if he wants to go back making movies, by all means do so. if that’s what he thinks that he could do to get back at his detractors, fine. but please not comedy. magmumukha lang siyang tanga sa buong mundo. and us Filipinos along with it. “Here’s a former president of some country in Asia, now back in the movies… as a comedian!” I still think bobo siya for having the perspective na gusto niya patawanin yung masa. because whether he enters comedy or action or horror, it won’t matter because everyone is going to watch it. hell, i’m going to watch it. i hope you get my point here. Bobo si Erap for taking a comedy role. I think that is plain and simple enough.
Posted by witssuzara at January 18, 2008, 9:06 am@shaira: i wish i was. but Erap isn’t when he said he wanted to do comedy. ok pa sana kahit papano kung nag action siya e. i’d pay 250 pesos and waste 2 hours of my life just to see him kick some goon as or shoot some badguy to kingdom come. e kaso gusto niya yung pagtatawanan siya ng mga tao. kala niya Pilipino lang tatawa. hindi siguro niya naisip na buong mundo pagtatawanan siya. so yeah, mabuhay ang Pilipinas… sick.
Posted by witssuzara at January 18, 2008, 9:10 amObviously my comment was not appreciated which I thought was a very honest opinion. Nevertheless, what’s up with the world laughing at us? If you believe the Philippines is a free country, then it follows that individuals can do what they want as long as it is legal. If having an ex-convict, ex-president as a comedian embarasses you then go ahead and feel that way…….. people have a different take on things and the PoliticaL Jaywalker is not ashamed of seeing former public officials as a comedian because Trapos has always been bozos no matter which side they were on….. cheers.

this is like prediction #8.. politicians becoming celebrities. pero he was a celebrity before entering politics. but not a comedian. sana lifestory na lang niya, that would be more interesting. hahahaha.
btw, reason niya daw for doing movies again is because wala na daw siya pera. now, that’s interesting.
